On the battlefield

Wave 7: drones, swarmers, shooters and bombers from every side, and every one of them a cartoon with an attitude.

The cartoon ship crossing the hand-drawn arena on wave 7, with a BOP! as an enemy pops and shooters' orange shots all around
Out in the open on wave 7
A swarmer bursting into pink cartoon puffs right beside the ship, near the edge of the arena on wave 7
Swarmers pop right in your face
The ship with a lit-fuse bomber right beside it and a ring of shooters' orange shots on wave 7
Cornered by a bomber: keep moving

How to play

Fly

  • Computer: move with W A S D or the arrow keys. The ship flies the way you press, whichever way it's facing.
  • Phone or tablet: put your left thumb anywhere on the left side of the screen and drag. A joystick appears where you touched.
  • Phase Dash: once you unlock it in the skill web, Space (or the DASH button) makes a quick dash. Nothing can hurt you mid-dash, and enemies you pass through take damage.
  • Keep moving: enemies pour in from every edge, and touching one hurts.

Shoot

  • Your ship fires on its own, all the time. You only aim.
  • Auto-aim: on by default, so the ship aims at the nearest enemy by itself and you just fly.
  • Mouse aim: turn Auto-aim off in Settings and the ship turns to face your mouse pointer.
  • Tank steering: turn with left and right, thrust with up and down, and fire the way you face.
  • Touch: drag your right thumb to aim. Let go and the ship aims at the nearest enemy.

Choose your game

  • Arcade mode: every run starts on wave 1. How far can you get?
  • Console mode: pick up on the wave your last run ended on, or start from wave 1 whenever you like.
  • Difficulty: Easy, Normal, Hard or Insane. Harder settings multiply the points you earn, up to four times.
  • Arena and ship: pick an arena and a ship (hull, colours and trail) from the menu.

Points are banked whenever a run ends, so every run counts. Green gems are score, pink hearts heal, and round badges are power-ups: Rapid Fire, Shield, Bomb, Vacuum and 2× Score. There's a Help screen in the game too.

Know your enemy

A few of the things that will be coming for you.

DroneFlies straight at you. Weak on its own, dangerous in a crowd.
SwarmerSmall and fast, and weaves from side to side as it closes in.
ShooterKeeps its distance and fires single shots at you.
BomberSpeeds up when it gets close, and bursts into a ring of bullets when destroyed. Don't let it go off next to you.
?
And more…Teleporters, chargers, snipers, medics, hives, armored juggernauts, three bosses and more. Meet them in the game; each one gets a card in the Help screen once you do.

The skill web

The middle of the skill web: a triangular grid of cartoon nodes in six colours round The Core, a white face with two eyes. Bought nodes are shiny, outlined shapes joined by thick inked paths out to keystones such as Sidekick, Dash Jets and Bubble Shield; the nodes you can buy next are hollow rings along dotted trails

Every point you earn can be spent in the skill web, a grid of 16,207 upgrade nodes that spreads out from a core in the middle. Open it from the main menu, or straight from the game-over screen.

  • Grow outwards: you can buy any node next to one you already own, so your web spreads from the core along the paths you choose.
  • Six regions: Blastworks (damage and fire power), Fortress (health and shields), Speedway (speed and dashing), Fortune (score and drops), Gadget Lab (strange weapons and your sidekick) and Mayhem (risky power).
  • Keystones: the big nodes unlock whole abilities: Phase Dash, a rechargeable shield, a summoned mini ship, bouncing, freezing, poison and lightning shots, extra projectiles and more. Buy the keystone first, and the nodes that power it up open up beyond it.
  • Prices rise as your web grows, so choose your path. Changed your mind? Refund nodes at the edge of your web, or respec the lot.
  • Auto-spend shops for you: Bargain Hunt spends your points on the cheapest notables, augments and keystones, Buy all fills one region outward from the core, the priciest nodes first, and each region's Keystones list shows its next five new abilities to buy the way to. The Skill Web button pulses when a keystone is in reach.
